Precise
The recurring monsoon season in Pakistan brings natural disasters and manmade havoc. Recent intense downpours have caused submerged roads, clogged drainage, power cuts, and loss of life. Tragic incidents include workers killed by a collapsed military wall in Islamabad, electrocutions in Lahore, and numerous fatalities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Climate change, heavy rainfall, incompetence, poor planning, and illegal construction contribute to the escalating crises. Despite weather alerts, authorities remain unmindful, leading to infrastructural collapses. The lack of political will and commitment hinders effective solutions like urban planning consultations and early warning mechanisms. Visible implementation is crucial to protecting citizens from the annual ritual of death and devastation during the monsoon season. International preparedness lessons should be considered to safeguard villages and cities from the heavy precipitation that occurs annually. The toll of these disasters has taken away the joy that once accompanied the monsoon.(Note: Original text was published in Dawn Editorials, July 21st, 2023 with title "Ruthless rains")
